What is the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF)?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory savings scheme for salaried employees in India, managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). It is designed to provide a financial cushion for employees after retirement. Both the employee and the employer contribute a portion of the employee's salary to the EPF account every month.

How EPF Works

Here’s a simple breakdown of the EPF contribution process:

  • Employee's Contribution: 12% of the employee's basic salary plus dearness allowance is deducted and deposited into the EPF account.
  • Employer's Contribution: The employer also contributes 12% of the employee's salary. A portion of this (8.33%) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and the remaining balance (3.67%) goes to the EPF account.
  • Interest: The government declares an annual interest rate on the accumulated EPF balance. This interest is compounded annually and added to the account, helping the fund grow significantly over time.

How to Use the EPF Calculator

  1. Enter your Monthly Contribution: This is the total amount (employee + employer) that goes into your EPF account each month.
  2. Provide Your Current Age and Retirement Age: This determines the total duration of your contributions.
  3. Input Your Current EPF Balance: If you already have an existing balance, enter it here.
  4. Set the Expected Annual Returns: Enter the interest rate you expect to earn on your EPF account. The government announces this rate each year.
  5. Click "Calculate" to project your retirement corpus.

Interpreting the Results

  • Total Investment: This is the total amount of money you and your employer have contributed to your EPF account over the years.
  • Total Corpus: This is the final accumulated amount in your EPF account at the time of retirement, including all contributions and interest earned. This calculator provides an estimate to help you plan for a secure financial future.
